Getting Beyond the Conference Room: The Games-Based Learning Virtual Conference

by Ray Kimball

Wishing you could attend more conferences? Love the convenience and low cost of virtual events? Then the Games-Based Learning Virtual Conference, June 9-11, may be for you!

What is the GBLVC?

Now in its 3rd year, the Games-Based Learning Virtual Conference (GBLVC) exists to connect academics, educators, designers, researchers, creators, and professionals in a space and time to share best practices using games, gamification, games-based learning, and serious games for teaching, training, education, and development. Created and run by the Games-Based Learning Alliance, the GBLVC brings together practitioners from multiple professions to engage in learning more about advancing their craft. The GBLVC has steadily grown from 41 educators in its inaugural year to 100+ participants last year, and we think this year will be even bigger and better. We know there is a space in people’s lives for a remote conference that delivers high-quality content, professional engagement, and superior networking; we want to be that space for you! This year, GBLVC is running from June 9-11, 2023 and our goal is to have participants from all over the world come together in a vibrant space.

What is GBLVC offering this year?

You’ll see two different kinds of sessions at GBLVC 2023:

  • Pre-recorded educational sessions. These run from 35-55 minutes and involve 1-4 presenters talking about their work in a saved video that you can watch at any time over the weekend. Here’s a sample session from GBLVC 2022 talking about Empowering Voices with Gamified Climate Action.

  • Live panel discussions. Scattered throughout the weekend, GBLVC hosts live sessions involving 1-4 presenters discussing topics of interest. Panel discussions include Q&A with conference participants, and the final video is available to all participants as well. Here’s a sample panel discussion on Imagining the Future Through Games.

In addition to the above, you’ll have access to bespoke networking spaces designed to help foster engagement and ideation among conference members. Your next great contact may be waiting for you at GBLVC!

Who will you get to meet?

Here are just a few of the great presenters already announced as of March 14th, 2023, with more being added all the time:

  • “Educational Games Quality: Rubric for Accessibility”: Matheus Cezarotto, Amanda Armstrong, Pamela Martinez, and Barbara Chamberlin

  • “Let’s play: Future-oriented learning with games”: Stephanie Woessner

  • “Getting Lucky with Gamification: Using Uncertainty to Create Unpredictable Learning Experiences”: Sufiz Suffian
